The Interview

Anneli[7][AC]: What inspired you to write your first book?

[AP]: I had enjoyed writing short stories for a long time but when I joined the local writers’ club and saw that so many of the members were writing longer works, I began to think about telling a longer story. My mother had an eventful life and I thought this would be a good starting point. I took her story and fictionalized it. Julia’s Violinist was the result.

[AC]: Do you have a specific writing style?

[AP]: I try to make my writing sound like an ordinary person talking, telling a story. It needs to be entertaining and colourful without being flowery, and yet with enough detail to make the reader feel as if they are in the scene they are reading about.

[AC]: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

[AP]: Not necessarily a message, but I hope that readers will still be thinking about the book and its characters long after they finish reading.

[AC]: Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

[AP]: Very often the events in my novels have their beginnings in something I’ve experienced or seen, but I take care to add a lot of fiction as I build the story around them.

[AC]: If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

[AP]: I don’t have a writer in mind that I try to emulate. My mother was an excellent storyteller who always kept her listeners spellbound to the end. What I am trying to do is to combine her talent for storytelling with well-crafted language, written correctly in terms of grammar, and in the voice that the story calls for.
