14th July – Summer update
Here I am on Bastille Day, this year in the UK.
The British summer has arrived and I guess even if the weather changes tomorrow we will all be grateful for the 2 weeks of glorious sunshine we have just had as our ‘summer’.
It’s certainly been hot here at the coal face – I will have launched 3 new titles in the space of 5 weeks by the end of this week. A new romance novelette LOVE IN A HOPELESS PLACE, a super-snappy short story ANGELA, and coming very soon…. my first boxed set collection!
My online party for the launch of LOVE IN A HOPELESS PLACE was stressful but fun – you can catch up on the music, excerpts etc here.
15th May – Audiobook Adventures
For the last month I have been nose to the grindstone on a new project. Well maybe that should read EAR to the grindstone – since I have been recording and editing audiobooks for Gallo-Romano Media.
I have always enjoyed producing my own short stories and novellas in audio format but for the first time I have been using the skills acquired over the years to produce audiobooks for ACX, the production wing of Amazon’s Audible.
Firstly we had to audition for the books – authors provide a description of their story and a sample of the text and the narrator then gives it their best shot. The books we auditioned for were looking for British English accents and a male narrator so my pal Oscar was called to action. The first was a “self help” book – but not one you would come across in every day life – “101 TIPS ON HOW TO BE A BOUNCER” by Darren Lee. We had a scream recording it as the author wanted a “cockney, slightly tough accent but with a degree of authority and refinement” – so Oscar had to put on his full East Enders persona to pull that one off.
The second book “THE GENTLEMAN AND THE ROGUE” by Bonnie Dee and Summer Devon, was a complete change and a challenge for very different reasons. Yes it was a romance – a rambunctious period romp with an orphaned girl to be rescued from the clutches of the evil surgeon who had engineered her mother’s death in order to….( well you can guess what he was after). But the main love story woven through the adventure was a departure from anything we have ever written ourselves, in that it was a passionate romance between the haughty aristocratic hero and his valet, a lad he had picked up from the streets. It is a highly erotic and explicit book – a best seller in it’s genre and highly rated. It was quite a tough read for a heterosexual male – but strangely fascinating for a heterosexual female to listen to and edit, as the descriptions are of rather hunky men in various states of undress and arousal… so to be honest I rather enjoyed it! At the end of the day, the love between these two is described in as powerful terms as any traditional romance that I have read and is both moving and tender.
Once we had gotten over the giggles at the hot bits, the narrator also had to come to terms with the SEVENTEEN – yes – that’s 17, characters in the book – some specified as particular dialects (cockney, yorkshire, evil slimy doctor, old posh magistrate) and others left for us to decide. We had a lot of fun creating them – and recreating them at moments further on in the book. At one point we had around 5 characters interacting in one scene and that was a massive challenge!
With a finished audio length of over nine and a half hours it was a major project to undertake, especially when you bear in mind that for each finished hour of audio there are probably 7 hours of work backing it up (the narrator takes about 2 hours to record 1 hour of the book and then the producer needs twice that to edit it and then there’s a final Quality Control run through!). We are now waiting for it to pop up on Amazon Audible and iTunes…
21st March – New Book Launch
This week sees the launch of the 3rd in my 5 part series of urban short stories – ESCAPE TO LOVE. Escape To Love follows Sub-Prime and The Chosen in sharing the common theme of the eternal search for love and companionship. As a 10,500 word publication, it’s a novelette rather than a short story.
A woman on the run from domestic violence with no one but her vulnerable autistic teenage child as a companion, lives in isolation and fear. While her hand to mouth scenarios are played out in the shadow of a threatening suspense, a story of crime and love unfolds around her. She cannot risk her child. Her own longings for love and romance have to take a poor second place. When the fallout from a prison break, a hero rescue and a murder mystery crash through her door and into her need and loneliness, it is no longer a crime story. It is a question of when Love in itself is a crime and how far a woman will go in its name and for those she loves.
In common with the first three in the collection, Escape To Love comes with a FREE MP3 audiobook version – this one is written with a female POV so at last, I get to record a book myself!
The book is available in Kindle format on Amazon worldwide on this link:
19th October – Facebook News
I’ve just created a new website for my short story The Chosen on Facebook. It lives on the fan page for The Chosen and I’m really pleased with it as it lets potential readers find out more about the book. They can read the blurb or check out reviews without leaving Facebook and more importantly buy it from Amazon.
It’s a shame that you cannot have landing pages anymore on Facebook – as I would prefer this design to the standard layout that we all have to use now. You can get the URL link for the website page though, so I may try and use that for tweets etc.
I would be really interested to know if it takes a long time to load – so if you give it a try please let me know!
PS The big yellow star is only there ’til the end of the month – it goes to my Giveaway for The Chosen so if you don’t have a copy yet, please do click that star!
It’s always exciting when you bring out something new. My latest story, THE CHOSEN is now released and featured as an October Book Launch on Loveahappyending.com on October 3, 2012. It is a gritty short story about two very different guys and one woman. It looks at love, morality and ambition in the context of our modern society and poses some questions.
I love both reading and listening to stories. I was not keen on Kindle’s robotic text-to-speech feature, since I wrote this story to feature differentiated tones and accents. Luckily my friend Oscar Sparrow is very experienced at public reading and he was pleased to help. I told him I had a ‘recording studio’. He was surprised to find it was basically my laptop, a professional podcast mic and a pop screen. But what shocked him more was the location. It turns out the best place to eliminate echo was my curtained and carpeted boudoir, with lots of cushions to create a recording booth. If only I had had a four poster bed it would have solved everything! Here is Oscar in full flow…
I have included the audiobook version for FREE when you buy the ebook. Simply download it from a link to the MP3 file that’s included in the last few pages. The great thing is you can listen on any MP3 device, (iPod etc.) or even on your Kindle – just copy it to the Music folder and follow the written words as they are spoken, or just lie back and listen and let Oscar do all the work!
